The Ports and Terminal Multi-Services Ltd (PTML) Customs Command, has intercepted 672 cartons of expired supermarket food items.
The Comptroller of the command, Mrs Talatu Isa, made the disclosure at a news conference on Wednesday in Lagos.

Handing over the goods to Mr Ifeanyi Nwosu, a Deputy Director, Ports Inspection, National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Isa said the expired goods were discovered upon 100 per cent examination.
She said that the 40 ft container, No GCNU 46394/5, was examined and found to contain 1,268 cartons and 899 packages of supermarket food items.

The comptroller explained that the container came in from Europe but the port of origin was not specified.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the seized items included: the UTZ Jumbo snacks pack; Kelloggs corn flakes; Hellmann’s Real Mayonnaise and Natural animal crackers, amongst others.

The comptroller said that a white DAF Truck was also examined and found to contain two pallets of body lotion of 752 pieces, with neither manufacturing nor expiry dates.
Isa said the seizure was made, considering the danger posed by the activities of these syndicates, ``who are more interested in what comes into their pockets, rather than the health implications to Nigerians’’.
``I, therefore, sound this note of warning to you all and to all the syndicates of such dangerous goods to PTML command and other seaports to desist from such acts,’’ the comptroller said.
According to her, genuine importers are assured of a conducive environment to carry out their legitimate businesses.
Isa added that the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Alhaji Abdullahi Dikko, had directed the heads of commands not allow such dangerous goods to pass through.

hmmmmmmmmmmmm....
