The women of Rivers State have declared their support for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate, Chief Nyesom Wike and his deputy, Dr. (Mrs.) Ipalibo Harry.
The women stated this yesterday, in their solidarity messages at a mega rally organised by Rivers New Vision (women team), held at Community Secondary School, Nkpolu, Oroworukwo, and Port Harcourt. They noted that PDP had created an indelible record in the state, by choosing Dr. (Mrs.) Harry as a running mate to Chief Wike.
Speaking at the rally, the party’s woman leader in the state, Mrs. Victoria Allison, stated that women drawn from the 23 local government areas, professionals, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) had gathered to demonstrate appreciation and support for PDP.
Mrs. Allison emphasised that no woman had been chosen as deputy governor since the creation of the state, urging women to vote en masse for President Goodluck Jonathan and Nyesom Wike, on March 28 and April 11, this year, for presidential and governorship elections respectively.
She stated that Wike had good plans for women in the state, which led to his choosing Harry as a running mate.
She said: “This is a build-up of the actualization of an age-long yearning by the women of Rivers State to participate in governance at the highest level of decision making”.
Dr. (Mrs) Ipalibo lauded the women for demonstrating solidarity, assuring that if elected, they would have a stake in governance of the state.
She stressed that what the nation and the state needed was peace and urged the mammoth gathering of women to enthrone peace in the state, by voting PDP in the forthcoming general elections.
She said: “We dressed in white because we love peace; that is why we have gathered here today. We demand peace for Nigeria and Rivers State.
“I want to assure you that I will not let you down. I will not disappoint you, if we are elected; there is a good agenda for women”, she promised, pointing out that she did not disappoint them, when she was Secretary to the State Government
