Meningitis:How To Prevent The Spread


                               

Cerebrospinal Meningitis (CSM) is most often caused by the bacteria Neisseria meningitides. Bacterial meningitis is an infection of the meninges, the thin covering of the brain and spinal cord. Symptoms of the disease include stiff neck, high fever, rash, headache, vomiting, and confusion.


Following the recent outbreak of Cerebrospinal Meningitis (CSM) in Nigeria, about 328 deaths have been recorded so far according to the Federal Ministry of Health.

Health Maintenance Organizations Are Fighting Me- NHIS Boss



                               

The Executive Secretary of NHIS, Usman Yusuf, said that, about 23,000 ghost enrolees have been removed from the National Health Insurance Scheme, NHIS.

The removal of the enrolees, who have been enjoying the benefits of the insurance scheme, created disagreement between the NHIS and Health Maintenance Organizations.
Yusuf, made this known in Abuja at the award of ISO/IEC 20000 standard certification to Galaxy Backbone Plc.

The Misappropriation Of N350 Billion Health Insurance Fund

                                          

Members of the House of Representatives’ Committee on Healthcare Services yesterday threatened to prosecute erring official of the Health Management Organisations (HMOs) over alleged misappropriation of N350 billion.

Nigerians contributed the fund toward the implementation of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).At an investigative hearing in Abuja, Chairman of the Committee, Chike Okafor, directed NHIS to halt the payment of allocation to all the HMOs, pending the conclusion of the investigative hearing scheduled for next month.

The Minister of State for Health, Osagie Ehanire, dropped the hint in Benin City, while unveiling the maiden edition of a Journal, "Annals of Medical and Surgical Practice," published by the Edo State branch of Nigerian Medical Association (NMA).

Health workers warning strike is illegal- FG



                     

The Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige, said in a statement that negotiation was already ongoing with the unions over their demands, pointing out that embarking on strike when negotiation is ongoing, is illegal.

The statement said: “The attention of the Federal Government has been drawn to the activities of a group of trade unions operating as an unregistered Joint Health Sector Union (JOHESU) under the Federal Ministry of Health, which has declared a seven-day warning strike effective today, June 22nd, 2016.

Replace All Striking Resident Doctors- FG



                               

In a circular released yesterday, June 21st, the Minister of Health, Professor Isaac Adewole, has ordered the replacement of all striking resident doctors in the various government teaching hospitals.

The Minister said the striking doctors failed to attend their training programmes despite ongoing negotiations and so their vacancies should be filled up with other doctors that have before now sent in their applications.

NHIS:Only 2500 Primary health facilities are functioning in Nigeria



                        

Only 2, 500 of the 30,000 primary healthcare facilities across the country are functioning, the Acting Executive Secretary, National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), Mr Olufemi Akingbade, has said.

He said in Abuja yesterday when he led some senior officials of the agency on a visit to the Nigerian Communication Satellites Limited (NIGCOMSAT) that the 27, 500 facilities which should cater for more than 100 million poor Nigerians were without any health official and the facilities there were rotting away.
The implication of this, he said, was that many poor people who should be enjoying health care services from the government facilities had been cut off.

So, FG Placed An Embargo On Doctors Employment, NARD Said It Should Be Lifted



           

The president of the National Association of Resident Doctors, Prince Dan-Jumbo, said that, the failure to employ resident doctors in teaching hospitals, specialist centres and federal medical centres in the country would have a blow on gains made in the health sector if not reversed. The statement by the national president of the association, and NARD secretary, Gbujie Daniel, called on President Goodluck Jonathan, to lift an embargo placed on the employment of doctors in Nigeria.
