MDCAN Condemn Election Shift
The Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria (MDCAN) has condemned the postponement of the general elections on the excuse of security.
The
group described the excuse given for the shift of dates as flimsy,
wondering how the security agencies that failed to contain Boko Haram
insurgency in six years would now scheduled six weeks to do so.
The
President of Medical and Dental Consultants’ Association of Nigeria
(MDCAN) Dr. Steven Oluwole in a statement called for a reorganization
of the defence structure of the military, warning that the president
will lose the legitimacy to rule if he allows the fundamental principles
of democracy to be violated.
The
statement said the reason put forward was ‘convoluted, contrived and
bogus’ and an insult to the collective intelligence of Nigerians."
The
group further observed that insecurity which had been advanced “as
basis for postponement of elections sets the stage for military
adventurism should the insurgency remain in six weeks time.
“Did
Mr President give orders to his security Chiefs to prepare for the
elections? Were the orders of Mr President ignored? If so, the security
Chiefs have betrayed their duty to be subordinate to civil authority,
defied and set the stage for potential truncation of democracy for
security reasons!”
MDCAN
therefore advised that the election should be rescheduled for a
fortnight and that “failure or reluctance of Mr President to act
speedily and decisively may put democratic governance in jeopardy and
plunge this Country into chaos that will fulfil the forecast of some
foreign powers and Mr President will lose the legitimacy to rule if he
allows the fundamental principles of democracy to be violated and the
will of the people that elected him derailed.”
MDCAN
which is an association of senior doctors in the country however
commended its members in the northeast who continue to provide services
without adequate protection.
