Climate change program, 1,000 benefit in Calabar

One thousand people have benefitted from the Global Environment Facility - Small Grants Programme (GEF-SGP) in Bumaji, a community in the Boki Local Government Area of Cross River.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the project aims to create awareness about environmental degradation and empower communities to address deforestation and climate change issues.
Five communities in the Bumaji clan, namely Bamabariko, Bakie, Bakuriko, Oguefor and Ochakwai, benefited from the Community-Based Climate Change Mitigation Project.
Edwin Ogar, Programme Co-ordinator, Wise Administration of Terrestrial Environment and Resources (WATER), the project’s grant recipient, said it aimed to create awareness on deforestation and food security in the communities.

``About 650 benefited directly from sensitisation on deforestation and climate change, while 100 participants (80 women and 20 women) attended the training on construction of energy-efficient woodstoves.
``Also, 250 woodstoves have been constructed, benefiting 250 households and are being used on a daily basis, while 50 farmers were trained on agroforestry and raising of economic trees.’’
