Out Break Of Ebola Halts Progress Of Tackling HIV In Sierra Leone - UN

The United Nations said that, the Ebola outbreak in Sierra Leone has slowed down efforts to tackle HIV/AIDS in the country. Reuters reports:
The West African Ebola outbreak has halted progress in tackling HIV in Sierra Leone, shutting health clinics and scaring patients from being tested or seeking treatment, the United Nations has said.
In an internal document seen by the Thomson Reuters Foundation, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) raised concerns that HIV prevalence and drug resistance in the country could increase as a result.


Gov. T.A.Orji Was Booed And Stoned With Sachet Water In Aba

Governor Theodore Orji of Abia State was booed by the large crowd that gathered at the burial ceremony of the Catholic Bishop of Aba Diocese, late Most Rev Vincent Valentine Ezeonyia.  The MC of the event in observance of protocol announced the presence of the governor and his wife. The announcement prompted a reaction from many people at the event, who started shouting “No! No! We don’t need him, No! No! We don’t need him; he has killed us in this state.”

32-year-old, Chinedu Em­manuel Nnalue is now cooling his heels behind bars follow­ing his arrest by detectives of the criminal investigation department in the Anambra State police command for allegedly macheting his 59-year-old father, Nwafor Nnalue to death.
 The state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Hosea Karma, who confirmed the develop­ment, disclosed that the suspect equally cut the deceased’s hands and legs while muti­lating the body.
Mr Hosea told Saturday Sun that the late Nwafor Nnalue was living in Damaturu, Yobe State with his family until they were forced to relocate to Anambra State as a result of the Boko Haram insur­gency. It was also learnt that the suspect, Chinedu was brought up in Yobe State before he travelled to South Africa and re­turned to join his family in the state where he eventually married an indigene.
Trouble, however, started after the en­tire family fled Yobe State and Chinelu’s wife refused to move with her two children along with the Nnalues to Anambra.

Albino Killings: 4 charged to court in Tanzania

A Tanzanian court has charged four people over the murder of an albino woman over six years ago as pressure mounts for authorities in the east African country to do more to stop the killing of albinos whose body parts are prized in black magic.
Ezron Mwasimba, public prosecutor in the high court in northern Mwanza city, said the four were accused of killing 22-year-old Zawadi Magindu at Nyamalulu village in Geita in November 2008 and cutting off her legs and one arm.

Pres.GEJ Wants WHO To Declare Nigeria Polio Free

Protest at US embassy over violence and insecurity in Rivers State

A group of protesters under the aegis of Coalition of Ethnic Based Pressure Groups and Human Rights Groups in Rivers State (COEGHAR), on Thursday, stormed the United States Embassy in Lagos, demanding for the US government’s intervention in addressing what it called the unacceptable high level of insecurity in the state.

CNB Update: Kidnapped Doctor In PH Dies!

The Police in River State has confirmed the death of Doctor Samuel Okpara who was kidnapped. According to the Police P.R.O, Ahmad Muhammed, the remains of the doctor were found on Tuesday, behind Comprehensive Secondary School, Borokiri. The Police P.R.O also confirmed that two other doctors who had been kidnapped last week had now regained their freedom.

The Rivers State Chapter of the Nigerian Medical Association has announced that it will have 7 days of mourning for the late doctor, staring on Monday, March 2nd.

Sad: Woman gives birth to armless baby, husband takes off

 Mr. Mudashiru Sheriffdeen, a commercial bus driver has abandoned his wife at the hospital for giving birth to a baby without arms. They were both living at Bosun Street, Ifo in the Ifo Local Government Area of Ogun State before the wife, Taiwo, delivered a baby boy who had no arms. 

Navy command arrest 7 suspects for stowing away in a foreign vessel bound for Spain

The Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) BEECROFT said it had arrested seven suspects for stowing away in a foreign vessel bound for Spain.
The Flag Officer Commanding (FOC), Western Naval Command (WNC), Apapa, Rear Admiral Jonathan Ango, told newsmen in Lagos that the NNS Ikot-Abasi arrested the suspects.
He said, ``Preliminary investigations revealed that the arrested persons boarded the vessel while it was discharging its products and their intention was to follow the vessel to Holland.
``On completion of its operations, MT ELECTRA BARI with IMO number 941682 left for Lome, Togo.
``It was while in Togo, it discovered some strange people on board and established communication with NNS Ship Ikot -Abasi.
``They now effected the arrest of seven stowaways.
“The suspects have been handed over to the Nigeria Immigration Service for further investigation and prosecution.''

Special promotion for soldiers that re-captured Baga

The Nigerian Army on Wednesday announced a special promotion for all soldiers involved in liberating Baga in Borno from Boko Haram insurgents.

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Kenneth Minimah, announced the promotion while addressing the soldiers during an official visit to Baga in Kukawa Local Government Area.
Minimah said the promotion was to reward the soldiers for their gallant effort in flushing out the insurgents.

Fruity Thursday: Coconut (Agbon/Kwakwa/Aku-oyibo)

Coconut is One of my all-time favorite fruits, it is a mature fruit of the cocos nucifera palm.
Cocos nucifera belongs to the large Palmaceae family of palm trees. Coco palm grows well under tropical climates.
I read from a nutrition journal that coconut is kind of an “exotic” food primarily consumed by health conscious people.
However, in some parts of the world, coconut is a dietary staple that people have thrived on for many generations.

There are currently 110 leprosy Cases in Anambra state

Anambra State currently have 110 confirmed cases of leprosy, the state Commissioner for Health, Dr Joe Akabuike, disclosed this yesterday in a press conference at Awka to mark the World Leprosy Day in Anambra State.
 He said last year the state registered 95 people, who were infected by leprosy and had been confined, and were receiving treatment in two rehabilitation centres in the state.
He added that fresh cases of the disease were also identified among 15 citizens of the state, making a total of 110 people who were currently suffering the disease and were being catered for in rehabilitation centres.

NAFDAC destroys N500m worth of fake drugs in Anambara

The National Agency for Food, Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), has destroyed counterfeit drugs worth N500 million in Anambra state.
The Director-General of NAFDAC, Dr Paul Orhii, disclosed this while setting the products ablaze in a dump site in Awka.
