Nepal to issue passports for 3 genders, third option is for people who feel they are neither male or female
Nepal will now issue passports for three genders, with a third option for people who feel they are neither male or female.
The long-awaited move follows a landmark Supreme Court ruling in 2007 that recognized a third gender.
Nepal joins Australia and New Zealand in recognizing a third gender.
Citizens will
now have the chance to choose between three genders – male, female or
indeterminate, marked by an ‘x’ in the passport.
It is hoped the change will help combat widespread discrimination against the country’s sexual minorities.
