Ghana to Ban Birds from Nigeria
Following the recent outbreak of bird flu in Nigeria, Ghana has decided to ban birds from Nigeria until the Organization for Animal Health (OIE) declares the country free of the disease.
Speaking in an interview with Citi News the Deputy Minister of Food and Agriculture, Dr. Hannah Bissiw, hinted that the ministry is yet to meet to implement the ban.
She said the move is to halt a possible outbreak in Ghana adding that any form of trade with regards to birds, eggs and anything related to poultry with Nigeria will be closely monitored to ensure a safe Ghana.
Veterinary authorities in Nigeria have reported a severe outbreak of the of the H5N1 virus in Lagos, in the southwest, and Kano, in the north, last week which has so far spread to 21 commercial farms in the country with over 140,000 birds exposed to the virus.
