Bird Flu now in Rivers State
The Avian influenza also known as Avian flu or bird flu has been detected in Rivers State.
Rivers State Government has confirmed the discovery of Bird Flu in the state.
The State Commissioner for Agriculture, Emma Chinda said the avian disease was confirmed after a thorough test was carried out on a bird which was showing signs last week.
At a media briefing in Port Harcourt, Mr Chinda revealed that the tests on the bird were carried out by the National Vetinary Institute, Jos in Plateau State.
According to the commissioner,“On the 17th of January, 2015 we got a confirmation from the National Institute that the bird died of suspected highly pathogenic avian influenza infection.
“The government of Rivers State has taken measure to contain the presence of the disease from its present location and we have taken steps which include quarantine of the farm, depopulation of the remaining birds and decontamination of the premises in line with the best standard procedures”
