Lagos State Medical Guild Extends Strike Ultimatum
Doctors employed by the Lagos State
Government have extended the 21-day strike ultimatum given to the state
government over the non-payment of their July and August salaries.
It would be recalled that the Medical
Guild gave a 21-day ultimatum to the state government to resolve certain
issues or face industrial action. The ultimatum lapsed on Sunday,
January 18, 2015.
The Chairman of the Guild, Dr. Biyi Kufo,
said the Guild had met with officials of the state government who had
promised that the salaries that were withheld under the ‘no work, no
pay’ policy of the government would be paid by the end of this month.
Kufo said, “The NMA and the Guild have
met with officials of the state government who appealed that we should
not withdraw our services and that the issues of withheld salaries will
be revisited.
“In the interest of the public whom we
serve, the ultimatum has been extended by another four- week period. It
is with the hope that the state government would use the time to address
the issues and bring forth solutions.
“We are also mindful of the fact that
only doctors are rendering services in the hospitals as a result of the
health workers’ strike. It is not our desire to engender a situation in
which health services would be completely unavailable to members of the
public.”
