On Air personalities to go on Strike
The Radio, Television, Theatre and Arts Workers Union (RATTAWU), says it will embark on a three-day warning strike on Wednesday over the non implementation of weigh-in-allowance for its members.
The notice of strike was contained in a statement signed by the General Secretary of the union, Henry Odugala, in Abuja.
It said that the refusal of government to implement the weigh-in-allowance since 2012 was on acceptable.
"We have discovered that government has no genuine interest in the welfare of workers in the sector. Therefore, we have notified them that we will begin a three-day warning strike on Wednesday.
According to the statement, the National Executive Council (NEC) took the decision based on the refusal to chart clear road map and attempt to digitise broadcast sector hurriedly without due process and adequate legislative backing.
"The deliberate plan to retrench workers under the disguise of digitisation and non implementation of Media Salary Structure as it was done in other sectors’’.
The statement also complained of refusal to grant the sector the right to collect Radio and TV rates as being practised in other countries.
It cited the failure to calculate relevant allowances with the pension and gratuity of those that retired under PENCOM in the sector.
It noted the secret merger of parastatals in the culture sector with the primary aim of retrenching workers.
It would be recalled that during a consultation meeting between the Federal Government and RATTAWU, the government had promised that the issues would be given adequate attention.
