More Personnel For National Hospital- FG
The Federal Government said it would employ more health professionals to work at the National Hospital Abuja.
The Supervising Minister for Health Dr Khaliru Alhassan stated this on Tuesday when he paid an impromptu visit to the hospital by 8:30am.
Dr Alhassan, who also visited the Federal Staff Hospital and Maitama General Hospital, all in the Federal Capital Territory, expressed satisfaction with service deliveries, state of the facilities, patronage, and punctuality of staff of the hospitals.
While addressing reporters at the National Hospital, he said: “As you can see, the hospital is in good hands. We met all the departments working the way they should be, the doctors are on their seats, the nurses are busy, the doctors are attending to one thing or the other.
I am very pleased at what I have seen today at the National Hospital. It has shown it is truly a National Hospital”. He said more of such visits at other institutions could be expected of the ministry in the future. “This is unscheduled; I didn’t inform them that I am coming. This was a surprise visit.
I came to see what my health people were doing; and I am very pleased at what I have seen today.” Speaking on the challenges he identified at the hospital, Alhassan said: “The challenges are work force; they still have challenges in the area of doctors. We are going to look into how to ensure there is adequate manpower to do the job.”
The Minister however expressed dissatisfaction with the failure of the hospital to display information on the Ebola virus disease on its walls.
He said: “We want to make sure that our health work force is always aware of Ebola. We have won the war but as long as there is Ebola case in the world, Nigeria remains at risk.
The health work force is the most important line of defenders in this country. Judging from the last outbreak in this country, majority (of persons who contracted the virus) were health workers. We must do everything to make sure that health workers are well informed and protected.
That is why we need to create that awareness all around us.” He also informed that for space constraint, it would be difficult for the National Hospital to expand its structures.
But he pledged that government would ensure availability of up-the-minute facilities that would put an end to medical tourism in the country.
Besides, he said government was already negotiating with the striking health workers in the country. He however said it was wrong for the workers to be on strike when government negotiates with them. “It is against Labour Law,” he said
