Governor Theodore Orji of Abia State said that he will handover a total of 102 primary schools in the state to its missionary owners.
The Governor, disclosed this on Tuesday when he met with The Interdenominational Committee on Return of Schools in Abia State at the Government House, Umuahia.
Orji said that, the schools will be handed over as soon as the committee handling the exercise is through with the necessary formalities.
The governor went further to explain that the state government was been careful, so as to avoid crisis that may erupt between communities and churches as that was why some schools were yet to be given to their former owners.
Governor Orji maintained that his government is the first to hand schools back to their owners since after the end of the civil war added that apart from returning the schools, his government passed a law to back it up.
In response, The chairman, Interdenominational Committee on Return of Schools in Abia State, Rev. Fr. Anthony Ogbenna, thanked the governor for the return of the 30 mission schools as the move has been justified by Abia emerging the 2nd best in the nation in WASCE results for two consecutive years and acknowledged with deep sense of humility his most recent proposal to return some primary schools to the missions.
Total number of schools to be returned are as follows: 8 schools are owned by the Adventist Church, 24 by the Catholic Church,13 by the Oua Iboe Church and 24 schools by the Anglican Church.
The Apostolic Church is to get 2 of its primary schools back, Methodist Church 16 schools, Assemblies of God Church, 6 schools; and the Presbyterian Church, 6 schools.
