The National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA)/ Subsidy
Reinvestment and Empowerment Programme (SURE-P) HIV/AIDS Programme held a
stakeholders meeting in Umuahia. The meeting was attended by different civil
societies, clergy, legal, religious among others to rub minds on the
NACA/SURE-P HIV and AIDS Project Implementation.
The Project Director of NACA/SURE-P HIV/AIDS Programme, Dr. Sebastine Wakdok, said in an interview with allAfrica News, he explained that the essence of the stakeholders meeting in Umuahia, Abia State is the comprehensive response plan of the President Goodluck Jonathan-led administration which came into being in 2013. Abia State and Taraba State are the first two states that are piloting it's intervention in Nigeria and this programme is going to be funded through SURE- P.
''We're here to deliberate with the home team that is Abia State led by the Commissioner for Health, who visited us in Abuja sometime ago and we discussed the various modalities of the intervention concerning Abia and we felt it would be wise to come to the state to discuss on the way forward because we are hoping that by March 31, SURE- P would have taken over the whole state structure here in Abia because this thing has been done by the implementing partners before''
He further explained that the prevalent rate of HIV/AIDS has gradually declined.
''The prevalent rate in Nigeria now going by the antenatal survey is about 4.1 percent of the whole population. Adults that are within the range of reproductive age is about 3.4 percent. If you look at it over the past years between 2007 and today, you will discover that the prevalence has gradually declined compared to those days that we had over 5.1 percent and above. So we are still winning the war, but there is still a long and tall order that we still need to work on certain modalities both at the federal, state, private sector and also International Partners level to be able to drive down the epidemic''.
