Abia Health Workers Dissociate Selves From The NLC Delegate List Protest

The Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria (MHWUN), Abia state chapter has dissociated itself from the protest by some unions against the delegates list for the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) national congress coming up in Abuja. It also disowned one Comrade Ezekiel Christopher, who spoke on behalf of the union during the protest.

While addressing journalists in Umuahia, chairman of MHWUN, Comrade Uchenna Obigwe, said the union in the state was in total support of the national president of the union, Dr. Ayuba Wabba,
and that the said Comrade Christopher is a stranger to the union, as he was expelled at its 39th executive council meeting held on April 3, 2014.
Obigwe said that the national executive council had conferred on the national secretariat of the union power to select delegates as it deemed necessary to the realisation of the ambition of the union to clinch the presidency of the NLC. He therefore exonerated the national secretariat of any illegality in the selection of delegates.
Obigwe said: “Even if we resort to the constitutional provision, (which is determining delegates based on financial contributions) the South-east is the least among the six zones and the delegates list would tilt heavily in favour of zones that are contributing heavily to the union.”
He accused Christopher of working for “people who are bent on destabilising the NLC through the introduction of sectionalism and tribal colouration in their campaigns”.
The chairman condemned what he described as the ganging up of members of Abia NLC against the union and called on the federal and state governments to “keep watch over groups that are plotting to destabilise the March 12 NLC elections in Abuja.”
