The trouble at the Federal Medical Center Owerri, has taken a new
turn as the executives of Nigeria Union of Allied Health Professionals (NUAHP),
the Medical Health Workers Union of Nigeria (MHWUN) and all unions of the
Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Owerri are demanding the immediate suspension and
thorough investigation of the Medical Director, Dr. Angela Uwakwem for various
allegations bordering on financial misconduct and high-handedness.
In a communiqué made available to newsmen after a one-day meeting which
was endorsed by the National President of NUAHP, Ogbonna Obinna, the National
Vice President (South-east) MHWUN, Ikechukwu Nwafor, and chairman JOHESU (Imo
State), Francis Ezenwata, the unions argued that the allegation of financial
impropriety and maladministration leveled against the medical director are too
strong to be swept under the carpet without thorough investigation.
The communiqué read by the National President of NUAHP also
demanded that the workers of the medical centre unjustly sacked, improperly
placed or demoted and salaries stopped be immediately reverted to their
rightful positions.
It further insisted that the investigative panel to be put in
place should be made up of people with proven integrity with nominees of the
workers unions as members, while the chairman should not be a medical
professional.
The unions which denounced the position of the Federal Ministry of
Health in its letter to the National President of NUAHP on the crisis rocking
the medical establishment warned that “Until these anomalies are corrected, the
industrial action in the FMC Owerri shall continue.
