Handle antibiotics with care

Antibiotic resistance happens when bacteria change and become resistant to the antibiotics used to treat the infections they cause.

This is compromising our ability to treat infectious diseases and undermining many advances in medicine. We must handle antibiotics with care so they remain effective for as long as possible.

Reflections:You need to finish that race!

I re-connected with an amazing old friend last week and during the course of our long-catching-up-funny discussion, he talked about how he has stopped chasing his main life goals and academic pursuits. I encouraged him with strong words and admonished him not to give up.

An athlete who is training in the hopes of reaching the Olympics must keep that vision, that goal, ever before him. He has the “Olympic vision,” and this gets him through every rough and grueling workout or practice. This makes the lack of time off, the fatigue during the day, the times when he gets little sleep at night, a nonevent.—Because that goal, that vision, becomes more important than any temporary pang of today.

Air Pollution:Breath life back into our cities

Air pollution isn’t just a little haze in the distance. Air pollution outdoors and inside our homes claims an estimated

6.5 million lives every year. It impacts our health through long-term exposure and causes near-term climate

change, threatening the lives of future generations.

Reflections:Going through a major change

Changes are awfully unsettling for me. I like my little nest, where everything is just so and nothing jostles me too much. I like my routines and schedules, the comfort of knowing what’s going on—both immediately and in the future.
All that was thrown up in the air recently when my husband and I found ourselves moving away from family and friends. We boxed up all of our belongings and drove toward our unknown future. We knew we needed to move, and we knew where we were going, but beyond that, the future was a big blank. And that was scary.

Reflections:Do you know the 90/10 principle?

What is this principle? 10% of life is made up of what happens to us and 90% of life is decided by how we react. What does this mean? We really have no control over 10% of what happens to us. We cannot stop the car from breaking down. The plane will be late arriving, which throws our whole schedule off. A driver may cut us off in traffic. We have no control over this 10%.

The other 90% is different. We determine the other 90%. How? By our reactions! We cannot control a red light, but we can control our reaction. We should not let anyone tell us otherwise; we can control how we react.

Let’s use an example. A business man is eating breakfast with his family. His daughter knocks over a cup of

How much dirt do you eat in a year

Kids under 1 year eat about 60 milligrams of dirt a day; from ages 1-20, they eat 100 milligrams.

We all know we shouldn't eat dirt, but we do it anyway. Mostly not on purpose – dirt gets into our bodies all day, every day, whether we want it to or not. It's understandably difficult to figure out exactly how much is getting in.

Reflections:You Can Be A Wise Leader

A good executive is not a boss—he is like a servant! A good executive simply is not arrogant. He listens to his employees. When the top people don’t communicate with those under them, then of course they don’t understand them or their problems. When that happens they’re headed for trouble!

Executives at any level should listen to those under them. They are responsible to make the final decisions, but being an executive does not mean that he has all the ideas and does all the thinking and all the consulting just within himself. A good executive will listen to others. A good assistant often knows more about his boss’ business than he does— and he should! The boss shouldn’t have to be involved with every little thing, but someone needs to be.

Reflections:Life Principles

A=ACCEPT: Accept others for who they are and for the choices they’ve made even if you have difficulty understanding their beliefs, motives, or actions.
B=BREAK AWAY: Break away from everything that stands in the way of what you hope to accomplish with your life.
C=CREATE: Create a family of friends whom you can share your hopes, dreams, sorrows, and happiness with.
D=DECIDE: Decide that you’ll be successful and happy come what may, and good things will find you. The roadblocks are only minor obstacles along the way.
E=EXPLORE: Explore and experiment. The world has much to offer, and you have much to give. And every time you try something new, you’ll learn more about yourself.
F=FORGIVE: Grudges only weigh you down and inspire unhappiness and grief. Soar above it, and remember that everyone makes mistakes.

Reflections:Yes! You Are Meant To Be Somebody

Do you know who the happiest people are? Those who accept themselves the way God made them, who learn to be happy with what they have and are not overly concerned about what others think. Struggling to live up to what you think others expect of you puts a heavy weight on you, but there’s freedom in humility.

Reflctions:Do You Have Broken Dreams??

“Hope is important because it can make the present moment less difficult to bear. If we believe that tomorrow will be better, we can bear a hardship today.”—Thich Nhat Hanh.

Those who have faith in God always get to their destination.

We all have them: plans that didn’t turn out the way we’d hoped, prayers that seem like they didn’t make it past the ceiling, dreams that break and are shattered as we wonder what went wrong. We go on, leaving behind broken dreams and seemingly unanswered prayers, but often they remain etched in our mind along with a question mark. Why didn’t things turn out the way I had planned, or hoped, or prayed?
What is a broken dream, anyway, but an idea of a path, or somewhere we thought our life should go but that led us elsewhere. We made a turn, somewhere, where life seemed to fall apart, or we lost our way and missed it somehow.

Reflections:Help Through Life's Storms

Some decades ago, when sea travel was much more common than air travel, a trans-Atlantic liner was caught in a storm. For two days the wind raged. Passengers were frightened. At last an anxious passenger climbed to where he could see the pilot. Returning to his fellow-passengers, he spread the good news. “We are alright!” he said. “The ship will make port. I have seen the pilot, and he is smiling.”

God directs our life and cares for us. He is always with you and wants to give you peace, even in the midst of storm.

Reflections:Doing things for the right reasons

Have you ever put pressure on yourself to accomplish or do certain things because of your age? You probably have at some point in your life.
For instance, if you’re a young adult, you might feel pressure to figure out exactly what you’re going to do with your life. If you’re in your twenties, you might feel pressure to make your living or working arrangements more permanent and official. If you’re in your thirties, you might feel pressure to settle down and get married or have kids.
The list goes on and on.

FG To Revive 10,000 Health Centres

The Federal Government was determined to revamp 10, 000 Primary Health Care (PHC) Centres across the nation.

Reflections:Yes, He Forgives

Some people are mad at God because they think He is angry with them. They think He will never forgive them for what they’ve done, that their sin was too great, their pardon impossible.
But there can come a beautiful moment when we realize that He understands whatever it is we are ashamed of, and He hurts for us, for our failings. He does not gloss over the enormity of it, but in full knowledge of our failing, He forgives it all.  Then the anger melts away at joy, at the sense of falling into His arms in gratitude. There is nothing so pure, so free, so clean as the feeling of being totally forgiven. Our anger disappears; peace remains.

Reflections:Yesterdays

      My yesterdays are gone,
      Oh praise His name!

Reflections:What Do You Believe?

The creator of heaven and earth is the Ancient of Days and there is none like Him. There is this story about three monkeys discussing about where man came from.
These monkeys sat in a coconut tree Discussing, Said one to the other, “Now listen, you two, There's a certain rumor that can't be true:

That man descended from our noble race--The very idea! It's a dire disgrace!
No monkey ever deserted his wife, Starved her baby and ruined her life, And you've never known a mother monkey to leave her baby with others to bunk. Here's another thing a monkey won't do:
Go out at night and get in a stew, Or use a gun or club or knife To take some other monkey's life.
Yes! Man descended ! But brother, he didn't descend from us!”

Reflections:The unbeatable choice

One of the main reasons we're here in the first place, from the Garden of Eden to the present, is to learn how to make decisions under God's guidance. All of life is that way. We must constantly make decisions and choices. If we know and love and want to please Him and do what's right, this causes us to seek Him in prayer and ask Him for the answers. It makes us dependent on Him as we try to make the right decisions so we'll go the right direction.
God always knows what's best and chooses only what's best for you--the unbeatable choice. So don't make the mistake of telling Him what to do or how to do it. Learn to get His answers, and you will find that His program is best. ---David Brandt Berg

CNB Fruity Talks:Grapes (Berries)

The cultivation of grapes dates back more than 5,000 years in Egypt, and they were highly developed by the Greeks and Romans. Today there are nearly 200 cultivated varieties, In fact, they are called the ''nectar of the gods''.
There are different kinds of grapes, in Nigeria, we have our own species of sweet dark brown berries too. I see a lots of them around Port Harcourt and its environs especially at the local markets.

Try all kinds of grapes, rinse them and eat them. Most of the times the grape juice available in the market is not pure. You can buy fresh grapes from the nearest fruit stall and prepare the juice yourself.

Watch your face! It can say a lot about your health too

Your face can actually tell a lot about your health and diet intakes.
Signs like pimples and lip cracks are notable signs that we neglect. We need to eat right to replenish lost vitamins and minerals that the body needs for optimum development.
Here are some proven facts about what the face says about your health, and remedies:

PALE SKIN MEANS -iron deficiency
Red meat contains haem iron which is the type found in the human body and also found in all forms of red meat, especially lean beef. So try eating some lean meat BUT not too much. A bite once a week is idle. Another source of Iron is Plantain, the half ripe or unripe plantain is very good.

Reflections:You may not achieve your set goals But.....

Do you know that, If you reach for a goal, you may not get there, but at least you’ll get a lot further than if you hadn’t reached at all.
I recently came across an anecdote that used a simple illustration to make a big point. It related the story of a father and his children who were accustomed to taking long hikes in the mountains. The children knew every trail and track up the mountains.

A soldier accidentally fired a grenade launcher during a patrol in Arauca, in the eastern part of the country, leaving a grenade embedded in his comrade's head.

Reflections: You Need Rest And Relaxation

Life is busy and it seems each year it just gets busier. Work, family, school, and other commitments just eat the day away and leave us with no time to sit back and relax. However, rest and relaxation is very important. In fact, getting enough rest is imperative to living a healthy lifestyle and when we do not relax and get enough sleep, we are putting ourselves at risk for illness as well as other side effects. The body needs enough rest each night to function properly. The amount of rest each individual needs every night differs, but the average adult needs approximately 7-8 hours of sleep each night to restore their body with the energy it needs to handle all of the demands of living each day.

NHIS:Only 2500 Primary health facilities are functioning in Nigeria

Only 2, 500 of the 30,000 primary healthcare facilities across the country are functioning, the Acting Executive Secretary, National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), Mr Olufemi Akingbade, has said.

He said in Abuja yesterday when he led some senior officials of the agency on a visit to the Nigerian Communication Satellites Limited (NIGCOMSAT) that the 27, 500 facilities which should cater for more than 100 million poor Nigerians were without any health official and the facilities there were rotting away.
The implication of this, he said, was that many poor people who should be enjoying health care services from the government facilities had been cut off.

Reflections:Miracles Still Happen

Following is a story told by Lois Bunker Woods of a miraculous incident that happened to her when she was a little girl.

The year is 1939. The place is an 80-acre dairy farm outside a small town, 16 miles from the nearest doctor or hospital. A little girl, an 18-month old toddler dressed in overalls, slams the screen door as she scrambles out onto the back porch to play in the sunshine.
Her mother is inside the house, cleaning. Outdoors on this warm spring morning, the world is full of delights to explore. The youngster runs through the dewy grass, picks dandelions and carries them back to the house. On the porch, an old enameled kettle sitting in the sun catches her eye. It is filled with peas soaking in arsenic (poisonous) solution, something that will prevent them from rotting when planted. Back then, seeds weren’t pretreated as most are today.

Reflections:Long-Term Thinking

When I became a mom, I got lots of advice on how to love my child. But not until a few years ago did someone actually point out that loving a child means wanting what’s best for them long-term. When my four daughters were young, long-term didn’t resonate with me. Back then it was about survival, meeting daily needs and keeping my head above water.
Now that my kids are maturing, however, the fog is lifting. I’m no longer surviving, but rather I am a thriving parent. The perk of this stage is that my kids want to spend time with me. We have real conversations that reveal their beautiful personalities.

CNB Fruity Talk:Date Fruit..Excellent Benefits

The Date fruit is a form of nut and it is scientifically named as Phoenix dactylifera, the date fruit has moderate levels of B-complex group of vitamins as well as vitamin K.

It contains very good amounts of pyridoxine (vitamin B-6), niacin, pantothenic acid, and riboflavin. These vitamins are acting as cofactors help body metabolize carbohydrates, protein, and fats. Vitamin K is essential for many coagulant factors in the blood as well as in bone metabolism.
Try eating about five dates per day; it’s a good source of iron. We can also make date smoothie: In a blender, mix dates, milk and ice cubes to make a healthy smoothie.
More Great Benefits Are:
  • Sexual Weakness: Dates are even beneficial for increasing sexual stamina in the human body. A handful of dates, when soaked in fresh goat’s milk or coconut milk for the night and then grinded in the same milk with the mixture of cardamom powder and honey, becomes a very useful tonic for increasing sex endurance and sterility due to functional disorders.

A second case of Ebola has been confirmed in Liberia months after the country had been declared free from transmissions, health officials said Sunday.

The 5-year-old son of the 30-year-old woman who died Thursday from Ebola has been taken to a treatment center in Monrovia, said Deputy Health Minister Tolbert Nyenswah. CNB Fruity Talk:Wonderful Carrot

Carrot is a wonderful vegetable/tuber/ that can give you your daily requirement of Vitamin A and many other important nutrients that are required for good health. Make it a point to have a carrot every day, plain or mixed with any other vegetable or fruit juice.
Raw carrot juice lowers stress and restores normalcy to digestive function.

Reflections:You Need Rest To Do Your Best

Do not run through life so fast that you forget not only where you have been, but also where you are going.
Life is not a race, but a journey to be savored each step of the way.
People are a lot like batteries; they need rest, they need recharging, and they can’t stand too much draining. You’ve got to take care of yourself.
Proper diet, proper exercise, proper rest, and proper living will keep almost anyone healthy.
