The new
outbreak is coming at a time when some donor agencies have completely withdrawn
their support in the fight against the disease in Nigeria.
According to The Leprosy Mission, an effective cure for leprosy has been available since 1982 in the form of multi-drug therapy.

Despite
the launch of a five -year National Leprosy and Buruli Ulcer Strategic Plan in
2016 by the Federal Government, seeking to eliminate the disease in endemic
states the disease still remains a menace in Northern Nigeria.

Why are all these diseases prominent in the north? The federal government gives them preference compare to other parts of the country, yet the diseases persist. Is it that there are no awareness programs to educate the locales on the presence and dangers of these diseases? Or the locales simply turn deaf ears to the warnings and refuse to take the necessary vaccines based on their religion or tradition? If the later is the case, then they should be ready to bare the consequences. I also think the traditional heads should help the government by compelling their brothers, sisters, wifes and children to take the vaccines. I think the vaccines are free, so they have nothing to lose. Prevention, they say, is the best cure. Ndewo nu o!
