Bird Flu confirmed in Ebonyi State

                   

Ebonyi State Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources, Mr Uchenna Orji, said that the state has recorded its first case of Avian Influenza.
                        
Orji confirmed the virus’s detection on Sunday while interacting with newsmen who visited the affected poultry farm at Ugwuachara area of Abakaliki.


The Commissioner said that, the attention of his ministry was drawn to the development, following massive death of birds at the farm.

Lassa Fever:FG To Inaugurate Action Committee

                 

The Federal Government of Nigeria is to inaugurate a National Lassa Fever Action Committee in view of the outbreak of Lassa fever recorded in the country.

This hint is contained in a press release, signed by Mrs Boade Akinola, Director Media and Public Relation in the Federal Ministry of Health, and made available to newsmen on Sunday.

Stop drinking soaked garri for now, to prevent Lassa Fever

                                  

The Medical and Health Workers Union, Lagos State Council, said that they  will be working in collaboration with the Environmental Health Officers to reach out to the grassroots, so as to embark on public enlightenment to discourage consumption of soaked garri for now to prevent Lassa Fever.
Mr Razak Adeofalade, the Chairman of the union stated this on Saturday, in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.

Razak said that, the house rats that caused Lassa Fever are mostly in contact with Nigerian most staple food garri, a cassava product.

Outbreak Of Bird Flu In Plateau State

               

Plateau State has recorded fresh cases of the Avian Influenza popularly known as Bird Flu. The state’s Chief Veterinary Officer, Dr Doris Bitrus released a statement today January 15th, She said:

No More Ebola In West Africa But....

                   

The UN's health agency declared the end of the most recent outbreak of Ebola virus disease in Liberia, announcing that all known chains of transmission have been stopped in West Africa, but the job is not yet over.

The World Health Organization (WHO) underlined that strong surveillance and response systems will be critical in the months to come to prevent additional cases. Since March 2014, the Ebola epidemic has claimed the lives of more than 11,300 people and infected over 28,500.

PSN Seek Local Production Of HIV Drugs

             

       
The President, Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN), Mr Ahmed I. Yakasai, has called for The Federal Government to begin local production of anti-retroviral drugs and vaccines.


He said  the creation of such funds had become imperative because of the gradual withdrawal of Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunisation Initiatives (GAVI) from Nigeria.

Lassa Fever:Doctor die in Port Harcourt

             

Dr Furo Green, chairman of the Nigerian Medical Association, Rivers state chapter has confirmed the death of a doctor identified as Dr Levi Njamala, who died as a result of Lassa fever.

He was said to have contacted the contagious Lassa fever from a female patient he conducted Cesarean Section on at the emergency unit of the hospital.

An Ophthalmologist, Dr. I. B. Apriokor, who works with the Braithwaite Memorial Specialist Hospital, (BMSH) in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, was kidnapped by unknown gunmen in the state capital on Sunday 10 January.

The world is full of beginnings and endings. We begin a new year with a certain hope—another year, another chance, a new day. But we carry with us the same fears, the same longings, the same resolutions. A more cynical riposte thus might be: Is there ever really anything new about a new year?

When the past or present seems so broken that its shards seem to reach well into the future, new days are often filled more with fear than with promise. I remember a time myself when I could see the end of a difficult situation, but I could not see a beginning unmarred by the residue of the past. “Is there really such a thing as a new day?” was the question I held disconsolately. A friend gave me the following words and asked me to hold them instead:

Lagos State Govt. Seals Off Houses Lacking Standard Toilets

                   

The Lagos State Government said that it had begun to seal off houses without standard toilets.

Mr Oluwatoyin Awosika, the Director of Public Enlightenment in the state’s Ministry of Information and Strategy, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday, that the closure of the houses was to check ``unwholesome practices” such as open defecation.
