An Ophthalmologist, Dr. I. B. Apriokor, who works with the Braithwaite Memorial Specialist Hospital, (BMSH) in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, was kidnapped by unknown gunmen in the state capital on Sunday 10 January.
PM News reports that Dr Apriokor was on her way to church when she was abducted and since then, nothing has been heard of her whereabouts even as the kidnappers are yet to contact the family.
The Rivers State Branch of Medical and Dental Consultants Association, has condemned the kidnap of the woman which comes shortly after two female doctors, Dr (Mrs) Uju Onatai, a physiotherapist with the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH), who was kidnapped on her way to work in April 2015 and Dr Khadijat Alhassan, also a Physiotherapist with the same UPTH, was kidnapped in December, 2015, and spent about a week in the captivity of her abductors before she was released.
The Public Relations Officer of the association, Dr Alali Dan Jumbo, has called for the immediate and unconditional release of Dr. Apriokor, regretting the continuous abduction of medical doctors by unidentified gunmen in the state.
“We condemn the recent kidnap of Dr (Mrs) I. B. Apriokor by unidentified gunmen. This is one kidnap too many of medical doctors in the state. We appeal to the kidnappers to release her unconditionally because her family, colleagues and her patients need her.
This is very sad because we are civil servants even if we answer the name doctors. The title gives you a high profile but we are basically civil servants. And I don’t see any financial gain from kidnapping a doctor. It is so traumatic on her family, colleagues and patients. We are feeling very bad right now,” Dr Jumbo said.
