Leprosy control plan launched in Nigeria



                 


The Federal Government has launched a four year National Strategic Plan for leprosy and buruli ulcer control in Nigeria, with a goal to reduce the public health burden of these diseases.

Minister of Health, Professor Isaac Adewole formally unveiled the document at a news briefing in Abuja ahead of the commemoration of the 2016 annual world leprosy day observed globally, every last Sunday of January.

Health officers kill about 4,400 rats in Lagos!



                 

The Environmental Health Officers Association of Nigeria (EHOAN), Lagos State Chapter, on Monday said that it had killed no fewer than 4,400 rats at six major markets in the state under its de-rat market programme.

The Imo State government at the weekend, said it has mounted increased surveillance across its borders, so as to guard against bird flu and Lassa fever.

The State Commissioner for Agriculture, Environment and Natural Resources, Udo Agoha, who said this at the weekend in Owerri, warned poultry and livestock dealers not to import birds into the state, as there was no reported case of the influenza in the state.

A homeless woman who gave birth near St. Peter’s Square on Wednesday has been offered shelter by the Vatican Officials.

She was discovered by the Italian police. CBS News reports that, she had given birth on a piece of cardboard around 2 a.m. Wednesday.

Another doctor dies of Lassa fever in OAUTH Osun



                     


The Chairman of the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital (OAUTH) committee on Lassa Fever, Prof. Adedeji Onayade, has confirmed that a resident doctor has died of Lassa fever.
The cause of his death was confirmed yesterday January 20th after his blood sample was taken to the diagnostic center for test.

Chief Executive Officer of the National Center for Disease Control (NCDC), Dr Abdulsalam Nasidi at the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja, said this during the emergency National Council meeting.

The battle against Lassa fever is not the same as that of Ebola- Health Minister



                    


The Federal Government has reassured Nigerians that they are commited in winning the battle against Lassa fever.

The Minister of Health, Professor Isaac Adewole, gave the assurance on Wednesday while addressing State House correspondents.

The Minister noted that the country could win the battle against Lassa fever the same way it won against Ebola because the latter was a single importation to Nigeria, while the former was endemic in the country.

Kano State Govt. releases N3m to procure disinfectants against Bird Flu



                   

Kano State Government has released N3 million for procurement of disinfectant to clean poultry farms affected by the recent outbreak of bird flu in the state.

The Commissioner of Agriculture and Natural Resources, Dr Nasiru Gawuna, made the disclosure in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Kano on Tuesday.

Lagos distributes 6,750 PPEs to health workers to protect them from Lassa fever



                 

The Lagos state government has distributed 6,750 Personal Protective Equipment, PPEs, to all government hospitals in the state to protect health workers from the deadly Lassa fever disease.

Commissioner for Health, Dr. Jide Idris disclosed this at the weekend.

Dr. Idris said the Mainland Hospital and all other General Hospitals had been placed on the alert and that the Anti-viral drugs for the management of cases were available, while ambulances had been dedicated to respond to referral and transportation of cases.

Bird Flu confirmed in Ebonyi State


                   

Ebonyi State Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources, Mr Uchenna Orji, said that the state has recorded its first case of Avian Influenza.
                        
Orji confirmed the virus’s detection on Sunday while interacting with newsmen who visited the affected poultry farm at Ugwuachara area of Abakaliki.


The Commissioner said that, the attention of his ministry was drawn to the development, following massive death of birds at the farm.
