NEPAD,SPDC Trains 300 Midwives In Niger Delta

              

Six Niger Delta states is set to train about 300 midwives that will support government’s effort in getting more skilled health workers to rural communities.

The 18-month midwives certification training which commenced in 2014 aims to produce skilled midwives.

 Statistics show that 45 percent of women are delivered of their babies with the help of unskilled birth attendants, thereby increasing the risk of maternal and infant mortality in rural areas.

Rivers State Bans Sale Of Local Gin(ogogoro)

              

Rivers State Ministry of Health has banned the consumption of local gin also known as Ogogoro following the death of over 20 persons in Bonny Island and Woji respectively.

The Director of Disease Control in the state, Roland Obed Whyte, said the decision to ban the consumption of the local gin was part of government’s proactive measures to forestall the death of some more persons, explaining that it had been difficult to get samples of the particular gin that claimed the lives of the victims in Bonny and Woji.

FG Wants To Sanction Striking Health Workers

             

The Federal Government on Wednesday said it would sanction any case of breakdown of law and order under the cover of strike.

The Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Health, Mr. Linus Awute, said government was worried with the way some of the health workers unions have been embarking on strike.

Awute stated: "The unsatisfactory conduct exhibited by the striking health professional union under the aegis of NUAHP has become very embarrassing, in the face of millions of other qualified Nigerian citizens looking for gainful employment out there.

"At the centre of this trend of impunity is the faction or branch of NUAHP in the Federal Medical Centre, Owerri.

Nigerians who volunteered to help fight the deadly Ebola disease in Sierra Leone and Liberia, returned home a fortnight ago, after spending about six months on the frontline against a virus that ravaged several countries last year, killing over 20,000.
The volunteers returned alive and well, although they are yet to complete an expected 21-day quarantine period.

But they have sad tales of deprivation and maltreatment, and accuse officials of the Nigerian government and the African Union of stealing from them while they risked their lives.
On Wednesday, some of the volunteers were locked in a hotel in Abuja where they had camped since returning to Nigeria, after days of bickering with health ministry officials.

Anthony Kulkamp Diaz, a 33-year old Brazilian man is making international headlines after playing The Beatles’s 'Yesterday' on the guitar while having brain surgery.

Kulkamp Dias was kept conscious during his operation to remove a tumour and played the British classic for the surgery team.

He also played 'Emanuel', a song he wrote for his newborn son, as well as Brazilian country songs.

Speaking on the feat, Kulkamp said “the doctors asked me to repeat one of the country songs so I even had an encore"

The Executive Director, Niger State Primary Health Care Development Agency, Salisu Yusuf, said that without an increase in government funding for vaccines, the less-privileged in the society would be denied access to immunisation services due to inability to pay.

Janese Walters of Ohio says she went blind after her cat licked her, transmitting a potentially dangerous infection to her.

She just woke up one day and couldn't see with her left eye.

'I looked in the mirror and I thought I had pink eye, or something,' Walters said. 'I went to the doctors and they couldn't figure out for some time what it was.'

For more than a month, doctors were baffled by the condition, but ultimately attributed the woman's sudden blindness to her cat!

Photo:92-year-old woman becomes oldest woman to finish a marathon

             

Harriette Thompson, 92, completed Sunday's Rock 'n' Roll Marathon in San Diego in 7 hours, 24 minutes, 36 seconds, becoming the oldest woman to finish a marathon.

She started in her 70s, after a member of her church approached her about being one of her sponsors in the marathon to raise money to fight leukemia and lymphoma.

"At that time I had lost several people in my family to cancer and I said, 'Oh, maybe I should do that," she recalled. "When I got out there the first year I just planned to walk it, but everybody else was running so I started to run with them."

Reproductive Health In Nigeria:UNFPA To Spend $75m

           

Professor Babatunde Osotimehin, Executive Director, United Nations Population Fund UNFPA, says that, UNFPA is committing over 75 million dollars to boost reproductive health and data generation in Nigeria.
He said the money covered the value of seventh country programme between 2014 and 2017.

According to him, the amount budgeted for core programme is 29.2 million dollars while the non–core is 45.8 million dollars. He also said that, the body is presently discussing with the National Population Commission on the next census, adding that the data generated will assist government in its projections and planning.
