Kids That Engage In Sports Are More Competitive And Health Conscious



           

Experts in sports and health education have said that, Children that are engaged in sports like basketball make prime targets for public-health campaigns and can teach their peers.

This comes as hundreds of boys and girls across 10 secondary schools in the FCT move into the second season of Power Forward, a project that blends health, education and sports for young people in the city centre with sponsorship from ExxonMobil Nigeria.

Health Minister Applauds Signed Health Act



              


Nigeria’s Minister of State for Health, Fidelis Nwankwo, was in Geneva yesterday for the 68th World Assembly, and he canvassed the country’s quest to become one of the hubs for the proposed African Centres for Disease Control (CDC).
The African CDC is expected to, among other things, help African countries effectively monitor public health, respond to public health emergencies, address complex health challenges, and build needed capacity. 

The minister noted that Nigeria was putting in place the entire requisite infrastructure for the development of a resilient health system. He gave further details on the implementation of the National Health Act signed into law last year.

Mrs Fayose Pays Medical Bills For Colleagues In Ekiti



           

The wife of the Governor of Ekiti State, Mrs Feyisetan Fayose, has paid the bills for comprehensive health screening for wives of chairmen in the 16 council areas of the state.
She said that the exercise was aimed at assisting the women to live a healthy lifestyle and save them from untimely death.

Photo:Nurse Dies After 42 Years In Rape-Induced Coma



           

The Indian nurse, Aruna Shanbaug, who spent 42 years in a persistent vegetative state after being raped and strangled has died.
Aruna Shanbaug was left with severe brain damage and paralysed after the 1973 attack by a ward attendant in the Mumbai hospital where she worked.
She was fed through the nose to keep her alive but developed pneumonia six days ago, the hospital told the BBC.

The nurse was 25 years old when she was sodomised by a KEM hospital cleaner that strangled her with metal chains and left her to die on 27 November 1973.
She survived, but spent the rest of her life in hospital, force fed twice a day.


FG To Inaugurate Technical Advisory Group On Immunization



            


The Federal Government has established a National Immunization Technical Advisory Group for the country that will help to stop vaccine preventable diseases like polio and others.
The National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), in a statement, on Monday, said the group, which is to be inaugurated at a later date is chaired by a renowned medical epidemiologist, Prof. Emeritus Umaru Shehu.

The president of the National Association of Resident Doctors, Prince Dan-Jumbo, said that, the failure to employ resident doctors in teaching hospitals, specialist centres and federal medical centres in the country would have a blow on gains made in the health sector if not reversed. The statement by the national president of the association, and NARD secretary, Gbujie Daniel, called on President Goodluck Jonathan, to lift an embargo placed on the employment of doctors in Nigeria.

The War On Polio Must Not Fail - WHO DG



           

Dr. Margaret Chan, the Director-General of the World Health Organisation (WHO), said that Nigeria should endeavour to rid the country of polio disease.
Chan, said this at the opening of the 68th Session of the World Health Assembly on Monday in Geneva, Switzerland.
According to a statement by Director, Press & Public Relations, Ministry of Health, Mrs. Ayo Adesugba, hailed the country for its ongoing efforts, which has ensured that no new cases have been reported in the last nine month.

126 Illegal Health Facilities Shut Down In Nasarawa State



                 

About 126 illegal health facilities has been shut down in Nasarawa State by the State Government.
Thomas Affi, the team leader of the joint task force of the inspectorate unit of the state’s Ministry of Health, disclosed this on Saturday while briefing journalists on the ministry’s inspection tour of private health facilities.

Nurse In Enugu Suspended Over Facebook Post



A nurse, identified as Alozie Ejimadu, a staff of Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital Enugu, was placed on three months suspension by the hospital for allegedly injecting a patient with unprescribed drugs because of the patient's support for President Jonathan. 
Ejimadu, had gone to his Facebook wall where he boasted that the patient would sleep till when the result of the presidential election would be announced.

Mr Frank Jacobs, President, Manufacturers Association of Nigeria(MAN) has decried the trend of labeling Nigerian goods as made-in-Asia or made-in-China.
Jacobs said that it was an ugly trend that was common among small and medium scale manufacturers entering the nation’s  market.

UN Chief Urges Continued Efforts To Improve Maternal Health



           

The UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-Moon, said that by investing in the potential of women, children and adolescents today, and over the next 15 years, states could save a generation within a generation and benefit generations to come.
Ban said this on Thursday in New York, at a high-level luncheon for his ''Every Woman Every Child Every Initiative.’’
